I Can’t Make You Love Me
Half of this week’s posts have been dedicated to non-Canadian artists, so I figure I ought to round out the week on this theme. Partly because, hey, why not? And partly because all I want to talk about right now is Bon Iver‘s live session at AIR Studios.
4AD and Jagjaguwar came together to capture Justin Vernon away from his usual army of 11 musicians who normally flank him on stage, instead featuring Vernon and labelmate/fellow Wisconsinite S. Carey collaborating on stripped down, piano-only renditions of tracks from last year’s Bon Iver and the Blood Bank EP, as well as a cover of Bonnie Raitt’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me.” These versions are reworked in a way that’s far removed from their recorded incarnations, somehow even more sparse and haunted when framed within AIR’s Lyndurst Hall, but still just as soulful and delicate. Simply stunning.
