Cold Blooded Old Times

Rootsy Canadian folksters covering a tune by a rocking lo-fi Marylander? Sure, why not. It’s one in a line of covers being released by Cuff The Duke over the next few weeks, eventually coming together to create the In Our Time, one of two EPs acting as counterparts to the two companion LPs the band has planned (the first of which was last year’s exceptional Morning Comes). The first to make its way to the surface is the band’s take on Smog‘s “Cold Blooded Old Times.” And while divining what motivates a band to cover one track over another is often an impossible task, we fortunately have frontman Wayne Petti to help us interpret their inspiration:

Our new record Morning Comes is a realization of the years that precede it. Its narrative is in the past tense dealing with loss and the passage of time. We wanted to pick songs to cover that influenced us over the years but would also tie into the theme of our record. Bill Callahan (Smog, in this case) is someone that every member of Cuff The Duke can agree on. His music is a staple in our van. “Cold Blooded Old Times” has always been one of our favourite songs.

There’s no word on the details around the release of the full EP, but expect to see more of these tracks cropping up around the internet in the coming weeks. You can grab Morning Comes now over at Paper Bag Records.
