Year In Review #9: Seeds

I’ve always struggled with words around Hey Rosetta!, which might be the reason this post is so late in going up. Three records in, they’ve become one of the most reliable acts in Canada over the past few years, consistently delivering quality work on everything they do. I’ve always loved their stuff, but I’ve never loved-loved it, you know? I buy the records, I go to the shows, I sing along to all the songs, but they’ve never managed to sink their hooks in deep enough to stick with me in the way so many other artists that I also love have.
So why is Seeds on this list? Like I said, if Hey Rosetta! is anything, it’s reliable, and Seeds managed to stand up every time any other record began to slip away from me. As time went on and artists came and went, Tim Baker had words to offer me something that the others couldn’t, or wouldn’t. The right things and the right times, as it were. To this day, I can still dependably revisit the record and find comfort, or solace, or inspiration in it when no others will do. Seeds is all heart and a lot of soul, and that’s what makes it the band’s biggest success to date.
Maybe Hey Rosetta doesn’t grab me like a lot of other bands do. But, maybe they don’t have to.
