Year In Review #1: Shapeshifting

What more is there to say about Shapeshifting that I haven’t already? Any regular reader won’t be surprised to see Young Galaxy‘s latest at the top of this list– to date they’ve been the most blogged-about artist on Soft Signal. They produce music that I connect with at a very deep level; music that resonates inside and stays with me for weeks, months at a time. It’s fitting, then, that Shapeshifting takes the top spot on my list.

This is a bold record. It’s a risky move for a band to abandon its identity and carve out a new one from scratch, a move that works in direct opposition of what just about every artist is doing at the moment. In a market where bands are expected to better define themselves as they move deeper into their career, Young Galaxy has become even less coherent. They’ve stepped out outside of themselves to erase any foregone conclusions that their history would imply, twisting completely inside-out. And it’s that gamble that makes Shapeshifting so wildly enchanting and exciting to watch unfold.
