Versus

Over the course of this year, I’ve dedicated five posts Young Galaxy, and peripherally included them in a number of others, making them my second-most blogged about artist for 2011 (just behind Austra). This means two things: One, that I really, really love this band. Two, that they’re riding on one hell of a year.

Not content to end things with anything less than the bang, the band has collected its many remixes done over the last little while and packaged them up as a digital album. The result is Versus, a collection of reworked tracks by noteworthy artists like Handsome Furs, Junior Boys, Grimes and labelmates CFCF. The off-kilter, worldly, kinda-tribal-kinda-dancey vibe characteristic of Young Galaxy’s recent direction has been worked deep into the roots of these songs, rebuilding them from the ground up as something entirely new, and far more worthwhile than your garden variety dance mixes. Wander on over to the Paper Bag Records page to grab all 11 tracks for the super-thrifty price of an email address.

Paper Bag will also be issuing a deluxe version of Shapeshifting early next month, something of a victory lap for the Polaris-nominated record. The new, digital-only version includes four tracks in their original form, without the interpretations of producer Dan Lissvik, illustrating how the record might have turned out if it was in anyone else’s hands.

The deluxe edition of Shapeshifting will be out December 13 through iTunes.
