Sleeping Patterns

It’s always such a low, low feeling when one of your favourite bands decides to call it quits. That feeling you get where your heart plunges into your stomach when you think, “That’s it, no more” is a rough one. I went through something like this when I found out that The Ghost Is Dancing had, well, stopped dancing and given it up sometime last year. But it wasn’t all for not, it seems. Rather than go their separate ways, the band (sans one member) chose to regroup and reform, swapping out orchestral-leaning indie pop for something decidedly more electronically charged. The result is the reborn Powers.

The band just dropped their debut EP last week, and it’s a punchy four-track piece that stands up and gets more right in four songs than lesser bands could in ten. Anyone familiar with The Ghost Is Dancing’s catalog will instantly be able to key into Powers’ knack for grand, anthemic numbers, which are knocked out with equal force across all tracks. My personal favourite so far is “Sleeping Patterns,” a towering New Order-esque shaker that barrels forward with hooks so sharp they threaten to cut you to ribbons.

Powers is available over at the band’s Bandcamp page in both digital and physical varieties, if you’re into that sort of thing.
