In Your Light
Yesterday might have been all about Feist’s Metals, but that’s no reason to count out Bruce Peninsula, who also marked the calendar with the release of their second album, Open Flames. I’ll admit, I hadn’t had much exposure to the band back in 2009, when A Mountain Is A Mouth was seemingly on the tip of every critic’s tongue, but earlier this year members of the band collaborated with the fine people at Southern Souls to produce a stunning collection of individual performances. And from that point on, I was completely taken.
Bands using choirs isn’t all that unheard of, but a band keeping one on full-time is something different entirely, and it’s what makes so many of Bruce Peninsula’s songs so memorable. Intricate vocal melodies grip you, pulling you in every which direction as their lines intricately interlock and resound with a vigor and passion that turns an 11-piece act into one that sounds like its made up of hundreds. First single “In Your Light” enacts this beautifully, with plenty of thunderous stomping and crashing to make the track feel impossibly huge.
