Data Romance is probably one of the best bands you’ve never heard of. Ajay Bhattacharyya and Amy Kirkpatrick’s blend of big, booming dance epics mixed with hushed bedroom vocals feels like kind of an outlier in Canada’s indie electro-pop circuit, straddling a strange line between underground hipster appeal and club-ready music that wouldn’t feel out of place at any mainstream-minded bar. And the band is rocking that ambiguity, cropping up in places like the über-hip new Identity Festival and Degrassi in the same breath.
And even if their self-titled debut EP is only barely three months old, the duo is capitalizing on all the heat they’ve been generating by prepping a second EP, due out sometime before the end of the year. It may be dateless and nameless at this point, but the first track has already been released, teasing the continuation of the chilly, hypnotic beats that the band does best.
