Terra Incognita
If you didn’t already know, Atlas Sound is the long standing not-so-side project of Deerhunter frontman Bradford Cox, acting effectively as a higher-level creative vehicle for the copious amounts of material the man generates. It doesn’t really matter if the 20 songs Cox penned last week weren’t up to Deerhunter’s caliber, although by most songwriting standards they still stand a head and shoulders above most others’ efforts.
So it looks like Cox has assembled enough scraps to put together a third Atlas Sound LP. Parallax is coming down the pipes thanks to 4AD, and already we have the first track from the album, a somber little number called “Terra Incognita.” Driven by some gentle acoustic guitar work and a Hammond organ burning slowly in the background, Cox croons soulfully as he articulates abstract images of a lonely landscape. The arrangement seems oddly well-structured and pared down for a man known best for his rich ambiance and electronic textures, but Cox wears it well. And if Parallax is anything like Logos or Let the Blind See Those Who Can See But Cannot Feel (or…pretty much anything Cox has put out, ever), you’d do well for yourself to pick it up when it drops on November 8.
