Surgeon

I feel like I’ve been sitting on this one for a while now, but that really isn’t true at all. Back in June, St. Vincent (a.k.a. Annie Clark) announced that a third album would be heading on out into the world in the fall, called it Strange Mercy, and left it at that. I was excited to start blogging about it, but without any sort of teaser track, I wasn’t really left with a whole lot to talk about.

That sort of changed earlier this week, when Clark posted a message asking fans to tweet the hashtag #strangemercy in order to unlock the first MP3 off the album. Looks like all that tweeting has finally paid off, as the first album track, “Surgeon”, was just unlocked this morning.

Like much of Clark’s work, it’s dreamy and tightly arranged. But over the course of four-and-a-half minutes, the track twists in a number of different directions, starting with a very Duran Duran vibe and then diving head-first into full on experimental electro territory.

Strange Mercy will be out on September 13, via 4AD.
