Fragile Bird

I might as well just keep the trend going and round out the week with yet another artist I gave no attention to back when it was relevant. Though this time it wasn’t out of complete ignorance. I’ve always held a kind of love/hate relationship with City And Colour, although it’s probably more accurate to say it’s more of a lukewarm/hate one. I could never, ever get behind Dallas Green’s “proper” band Alexisonfire, which I realize probably shouldn’t have tainted my opinion of his solo work as much as it did, but it happened anyway. And even if his output as City And Colour is completely dichotomous to Alexisonfire, what I was hearing usually left me indifferent and occasionally bored.

So I was a little bit resistant towards seeking out “Fragile Bird” when I saw how much the internet was talking it up. But here I am, spinning the entirety of Little Hell and being pleasantly surprised at what I’m hearing. There aren’t any big revelations here, which isn’t surprising. But it’s an affirmation of Green as a competent songwriter who can completely shed his hardcore roots and craft an earnest, indie-folk-pop album that even your mother wouldn’t mind tapping her toes along to.
